The Master's in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability (MSLS) program is a one-year program founded on the basic premise that a "whole-system," trans-disciplinary approach is needed to deal with the sustainability challenge. Two integrated streams are the focus: 1) a framework for strategic sustainable development; and 2) organizational learning and leadership required for sustainability decision-making. MSLS has a very different methodology than I was used to, and has taught me, in this fast-paced world that we’re living, the value of taking time to look at things from different perspectives, breathing deeply, and focusing on the process. I have also learnt the value of cooperation, co-creation; working together to create a better world that we all want.
Understanding the dynamics and structure for these collaborations to happen, and the importance of collaborative leadership, are the some of key lessons that I brought from Karlskrona, for my work, and my life. I feel confident and empowered, and grateful, for being part of the MSLS family, this community of sharing and understanding. I know that, wherever I go, I can count on them to support me, and inspire me. Writing the thesis, in groups, was the best way to practice everything we had been learning - and still are. Together with my thesis mates, Johanne Gallagher and Peter Orell, we have researched about communication and planning tools for ecovillages from a strategic sustainable development perspective. We were really fortunate to count on the help of prominent experts on the field and ecovillages from around the world. Next for me: I will work with the social and environmental programs for a mining industry in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, almost 2000 km from my home in southern Brazil. I want to once more express my gratitude for the MSLS staff, my wonderful classmates, my thesis mates and our advisors, and my landlord in Karksrona. Most importantly, I thank StratLeade and everyone that supports it, for making this wonderful experience possible. And now, as this new life begins for me, once again, far from home, I know that my home is within me, in my heart, in all these teachings, memories, and my wonderful friends from around the world. Bureo Skateboards, co-founded by MSLS graduate Ben Kneppers, has just been accepted into the Startup Chile program! Bureo Skateboards designs and manufactures a unique line of sustainable skateboards by utilizing the growing amount of plastic pollution in Chilean communities and coastlines. By offering recycled high quality products, Bureo enables ethically conscious consumers to support recycling development and job growth for local inhabitants. Bureo comes from the language of the Mapuche, the native Chileans, and means ´the waves’. The name was selected in honor of the Chilean people, and it represents the journey they are embarking on through their work at Bureo. Just as a wave originates from a disturbance of wind along the ocean surface, they are making a small change in the greater surface of plastic pollution. Eventually through time and energy, the waves of Bureo will develop the force required to cause real change. Bureo Skateboards. Make waves. They have a great journey ahead with the goal being to become the most environmentally and socially responsible skateboard that has ever existed. Please follow and spread the word through their Facebook page. Dear friends of Stratleade,
We are pleased to commence this year's annual fundraising campaign!! Please see the message below from past grant recipient Samuel Brizuela (MSLS '11). Stratleade will provide at least one grant for a deserving student studying sustainability at BTH next year in memory of Michael Henson (read more here) -- and hopefully support additional grants and activities as well. -- Hello from beautiful Guatemala to all the MSLS / MSPI Alumni across the globe! As some of you know, three years ago I had the privilege to receive the StratLeade Scholarship which gave me the opportunity to be part of MSLS, opportunity which I wouldn't have been able to take if it had not been for the support of many of you. Because of your support I am now able to hold a degree from BTH and I am able to serve better my community here in Guatemala as wonderful opportunities have opened and I know more will. Now, it is this time of the year when we are kicking off our fundraiser campaign to be able to provide more grants for the next generation of MSLSers and MSPIers. Our goal this year is to raise $10,000 by September 30th. This is our stretching goal and we are aiming to pass it if possible. Take a moment to remember all those great moments you lived while studying your master's course and I am sure you would like more people to be able to have this opportunity. Giving is easy, just go follow this link www.stratleade.org and share a life changing experience with someone else. I leave you with some inspiring quotes on giving: “The value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving.” -Albert Einstein "It is more blessed to give than to receive." -Jesus “Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present.” -Albert Camus “They who give have all things; they who withhold have nothing” -Hindu Proverb Samuel Brizuela CORPORATE AND ENTREPRENEURIAL SUSTAINABILITY CONSULTANT MSc Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability In Toronto this month?
